A Hollywood screenwriters’ strike that is still in effect may have unanticipated consequences for the French Riviera festival.

The celebration will undoubtedly continue, though, as the festival is set to screen many eagerly awaited high-profile movies, including Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” by James Mangold. In the upcoming week and a half, celebrities including Natalie Portman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, Alicia Vikander, the Weeknd, and Scarlett Johansson will walk the red carpet at Cannes.

Swedish director Ruben stlund, a two-time Palme winner who took up the award last year for the social satire “The Triangle of Sadness,” is chairing the jury this year. Brie Larson, Paul Dano, Julia Ducournau of France, Damián Szifron of Argentina, Atiq Rahimi of Afghanistan, Denis Ménochet of France, Maryam Tourzani of Morocco, and Rungano Nyoni of Zambia and Wales make up the remaining members of the jury.

The choice for the first night has generated some debate. Johnny Depp co-stars as Louis XV in “Jeanne du Barry,” which is directed and co-stars French actor-director Mawenn. Since his trial with his ex-wife Amber Heard last year, Johnny Depp hasn’t acted in a new movie. After accusing one another of verbal and physical abuse, a civil jury gave Depp $10 million in damages and Heard $2 million.

Cannes director Thierry Fremaux defended the selection in comments to the media on Monday, stating that Johnny Depp is amazing in the movie and he paid no heed to the trial.

Truth be told, Fremaux declared, “My life is governed by just one rule: the freedom of thought, speech, and action within the bounds of the law.” “We wouldn’t be here discussing it if Johnny Depp had been prohibited from acting in a film or if the movie had been banned.”
